AquaIllumination Sol

AquaIllumination (C2 Development)

2010s · 2010LightingDiscontinued

An early modular LED fixture built around a 24-LED puck (Cree XP-G whites with XP-E blue and royal blue), the first LED light to use Cree XP-G emitters and the unit that set the blue-heavy spectrum precedent.

Why it mattered

AquaIllumination's first LED Module was only the second controllable LED light offered to the hobby, after the PFO Solaris, and the first modular one. The Sol, on the market by 2010, refined that idea into a compact puck system that could scale across a tank.

The Sol Blue's spectrum was its legacy. Loading the array with blue and royal blue emitters chased coral fluorescence in a way white-heavy fixtures did not, and the blue-forward look became the hobby's default aesthetic for a decade.

Demand outran supply — early units were back-ordered for months. The Sol proved LED could be a serious reef light rather than an experiment, and every mainstream LED fixture since has built on the ground it broke.

Key specs

  • 24 LEDs per module: 8 white, 8 blue, 8 royal blue (Sol Blue)
  • First LED fixture to use Cree XP-G emitters
  • 40° and 70° lens options for spread vs. punch
  • Modular: multiple units link across longer tanks
  • External controller for intensity and timers

Keeper notes

  • Early adopters remember the back-orders as much as the light — getting one in 2010 took patience.
  • Some keepers found the early blue-heavy output harsh and missed halide shimmer; others credit it with the best coral pop they had seen.
  • The modular puck idea is widely credited with showing how LED fixtures should scale.
