EcoTech Marine Radion XR30w

EcoTech Marine

2010s · 2011LightingEvolved

EcoTech's first LED fixture, announced September 1, 2011 and debuted at MACNA days later: about 130 W of Cree and Osram LEDs in five controllable channels, tunable from 6,000K to 20,000K, at a $750 launch price.

Why it mattered

The Radion arrived with EcoTech's VorTech reputation behind it and treated light as software. Five channels of LEDs under digital control meant spectrum and intensity became settings rather than bulb-shopping decisions.

Wireless communication with VorTech pumps hinted at an equipment ecosystem that talked to itself — pumps and lights coordinating feed modes and night modes from one platform.

Its modular, upgradeable clusters also made a promise early LEDs needed: the fixture could improve without becoming landfill. The Radion line has run through many generations since, and XR30 remains the family name for a standard reef-tank footprint.

Keeper notes

  • Keepers praise the control depth and the upgrade path that kept early fixtures relevant for years.
  • The launch price drew criticism in 2011; the counter-argument was cost per year against bulb-and-chiller halide running costs.
  • Radion spectrum presets shared between keepers became a hobby ritual of their own.
