EcoTech Marine VorTech MP40

EcoTech Marine

2000s · 2006FlowEvolved

A propeller pump split in two by the aquarium glass: the motor sits outside, the propeller inside, coupled magnetically through the pane — no cord, no motor heat, and no electricity in the water.

Why it mattered

Every in-tank pump before the VorTech dragged compromises with it: cords in the water, motor heat warming the tank, and a bulky body interrupting the aquascape. EcoTech's through-glass magnetic coupling removed all three at once.

Introduced in the mid-2000s, the MP40 covered 100–3,000 gph across tanks from about 20 to 500 gallons and glass up to 3/4 inch. The wet side was a slim cage you could point and forget; the electronics lived outside where they stayed dry.

Flow modes became software: reef crest, lagoon, tidal swell, nutrient transport. The VorTech turned circulation into a programmable behavior, and the MP40wQD generation later pushed past 4,500 gph at 9–38 W while cutting noise dramatically.

Key specs

  • Through-glass magnetic drive; motor outside, propeller inside
  • Launch spec: 100–3,000 gph; tanks ~20–500 gal; glass 1/8–3/4 in
  • No heat transfer and no cord in the water
  • Programmable flow modes; wireless sync between pumps
  • Later MP40wQD: 4,500+ gph at 9–38 W

Keeper notes

  • Keepers love the clean look — the small wet side is the least visible pump in its class.
  • Wet-side maintenance is the common chore: cages foul and bearings wear, and spares are worth owning.
  • The premium price is the standing complaint, answered by owners with the heat, safety, and ecosystem arguments.
