Euro-Reef Needle-Wheel Skimmer
Euro-Reef
One of the late-1990s pioneers of the needle-wheel skimmer, using a pin-wheel impeller (early units on Sedra pumps) to shred air into extremely fine bubbles for dense, dry foam.
Why it mattered
The needle wheel changed what a skimmer pump was for. Instead of pushing water and hoping for bubbles, the impeller itself became a bubble machine, chopping the air stream into a fine white fog inside the pump volute.
Euro-Reef was among the couple of companies that popularized the approach in the late 1990s, and its in-sump skimmers became a default recommendation for serious reef tanks of the era.
The company renamed itself Reef Dynamics at the start of 2010 and closed for good in 2015. The brand is gone; the needle-wheel layout it helped establish is now the default architecture of nearly every skimmer sold.
Key specs
- Needle-wheel / pin-wheel impeller shreds incoming air
- Early models used Sedra pumps
- In-sump, recirculating and external variants
- Company became Reef Dynamics in 2010; closed 2015
Keeper notes
- Owners remember Euro-Reef skimmers as the first units that produced truly dry, dark foam without constant tuning.
- Second-hand units still trade among collectors who keep spare Sedra impellers on hand.
- The brand's closure is often cited when keepers discuss how fast the industry consolidated around a few big names.
