GHL ProfiLux
GHL Advanced Technology
Germany's answer to the aquarium computer: the first ProfiLux arrived in 1998 with light dimming, pH, and temperature control, and the modular line has been refined in Germany ever since.
Why it mattered
GHL introduced the first ProfiLux Computer in 1998, originally developed for private use to make one keeper's aquarium safer and more convenient. The performance of the prototype convinced the company the wider hobby needed it too.
Where American controllers grew around the power bar, ProfiLux grew around measurement precision and modularity — salinity, redox, level, flow, and leakage sensing, pump and light control, weather simulation, and dosing, all engineered and produced in Germany.
The ProfiLux line earned Germany's Rhineland-Pfalz Innovation Award in 2005 for the controller and again in 2013 for the complete system. For keepers who rank reliability above ecosystem size, ProfiLux has been the standing alternative for over twenty-five years.
Key specs
- First ProfiLux Computer introduced 1998
- Designed and manufactured in Germany
- Modular sensors: pH, temperature, salinity, redox, level, flow, leakage
- Expansion through PAB bus devices and powerbars
- Later ecosystem: Mitras lights, GHL Doser, KH Director, ION Director
Keeper notes
- Owners consistently cite stability — ProfiLux systems are described as gear you set up once and stop thinking about.
- The trade-off most often named is the smaller North American community and dealer network compared with Apex.
- The PC-first software heritage divides users: some prefer its depth, others want everything in a phone app.
