Reef Octopus VarioS DC Pump

Reef Octopus (CoralVue)

2010s · 2016FlowStill made

A controllable DC return and circulation pump line with a multi-speed controller, 0–10V external control port, float-switch input, and timed feed modes — the pump as a managed device rather than a constant drone.

Why it mattered

AC return pumps ran at one speed, set by plumbing resistance and hope. DC pumps like the VarioS line, which reached the market in the mid-2010s, made flow a dial: output could be tuned to the overflow, quieted at night, and paused for feeding.

The controller brought safety features with it. A float-switch input can stop the pump before it runs dry, feed modes pause flow for 15 or 60 minutes, and the 0–10V port hands control to aquarium computers for coordinated routines.

VarioS pumps also powered Reef Octopus skimmers, standardizing one controller across return and skimmer duty. Controllable DC is now the default expectation for return pumps across the industry.

Key specs

  • 24V/36V DC controllable motor with multi-speed controller
  • 0–10V external control port for aquarium controllers
  • Float-switch input for run-dry protection
  • 15/60-minute feed modes
  • Ceramic shaft and bearings for quiet running

Keeper notes

  • Keepers value dialing return flow to silence an overflow without replumbing.
  • DC pumps draw less power at partial speed, and the electricity savings over AC pumps add up on large systems.
  • As with all DC pumps, the controller and power supply are extra failure points compared with a plain AC pump.
