Venturi Protein Skimmer (Mazzei / Lifereef)
Mazzei / Lifereef
A pump-driven skimmer that uses a Mazzei venturi injector to pull air into the water stream, replacing fading airstones with a mechanical bubble maker that runs the same every day.
Why it mattered
Venturi skimmers appeared around 1985 and solved the air-driven design's biggest problem: consistency. A venturi injector does not rot, clog the way wood does, or weaken week by week.
The Mazzei injector became the industry benchmark — Lifereef built its long-lived skimmer line around Mazzei venturis and built a decades-long reputation on that reliability.
Venturi skimmers also set the template for pump-driven foam fractionation generally. Needle wheels later won on efficiency and bubble size, but plenty of venturi units from the 1990s are still skimming today, which few other designs can claim.
Key specs
- Mazzei venturi injector draws air into the pump output
- No airstones to replace
- Needs a pressure-capable pump to drive the venturi well
- Lifereef VS-series is the long-running exemplar
Keeper notes
- Lifereef owners are famously loyal, often citing skimmers still in service after decades.
- Critics note venturi injectors trade some bubble fineness for durability compared with needle wheels.
- Keepers value that performance on day one matches performance a year later, with no consumable stones.
