Care Summary
The Lettuce Sea Slug is one of the most reef-safe and beginner-friendly nudibranch-like animals in the trade, feeding on hair algae and Bryopsis rather than sponges, which makes it actually useful in a problem tank. It does well in established reef tanks with at least some nuisance algae present, and while it is peaceful and will not harm corals or fish, it will slowly starve once it exhausts the available algae supply. The trick is not to add it to a spotlessly clean tank, as it needs a reasonable standing crop of hair algae or Bryopsis to sustain itself, and a tank without that food source will see the animal fade within weeks. Once the target algae is gone, supplement with sheets of nori or dried algae tied to a clip near the substrate, as many individuals will transition to sheet algae feeding once their preferred natural food is depleted.
