Star Eye Hermit Crab
Dardanus venosus
Care Summary
The Star Eye Hermit Crab is a larger, boldly patterned hermit with distinctively stalked eyes and strong claws that give it an imposing look compared to the typical nano hermits most reefers keep. It does fine in a reef setting with sturdy corals and fish, but it's big enough and bold enough to harass smaller hermits, snails, and occasionally slow-moving inverts if it feels like competing for resources. Because this species can grow quite large, it needs appropriately sized shells available, and without them it will aggressively evict other hermits from their shells to find a fit. Feed it a varied omnivore diet including meaty chunks and algae-based foods several times a week, and keep a shell selection on hand to prevent conflict with smaller tankmates.
