Care Summary
The Spotted Mandarin Dragonet is every bit as demanding as the regular Mandarin; it requires a mature, copepod-rich system with a large, productive refugium or it will quietly starve. The spotted pattern is distinct from the swirling lines of the standard Mandarin but the biology is identical; both species consume live copepods and amphipods as their primary food source. A mature 30+ gallon reef with a 10+ gallon refugium seeded with Tisbe and Tigriopus copepods is the minimum viable setup; smaller or newer tanks simply cannot produce enough prey volume. Some Spotted Mandarins are more receptive to frozen copepods than the standard species; invest in daily target feeding with frozen Cyclopeeze or live pods to supplement and potentially transition it.
