Royal Gramma

Care Summary

The Royal Gramma is one of the best beginner marine fish available; it is hardy, reef-safe, peaceful toward most tankmates, and its purple and yellow bicolor is genuinely beautiful. House it in 30+ gallons with rockwork caves and overhangs; it is a cave-oriented fish that spends a lot of time hovering near shelter and orienting upside-down under ledges. Feed frozen mysis and meaty small foods twice daily; it eats readily from day one and is not fussy about food type, making it one of the easiest marine fish to feed consistently. Keep only one per tank unless you have 75+ gallons; two Royal Grammas in a small space will fight persistently, with the dominant fish often chasing the weaker one into permanent hiding and starvation.
