Threespot Angelfish
Apolemichthys trimaculatus
Reef Safe
With Caution
Care Summary
The Threespot Angelfish is an underappreciated large angel with striking yellow, blue, and black coloration; it is rarer in the trade than its beauty deserves. Plan for 150+ gallons; like all large Apolemichthys angels it is an active swimmer that needs substantial open water and will become pale and lethargic in cramped systems. Feed sponge-based angel blends, nori, mysis, and varied frozen foods daily; it can be finicky about prepared foods initially, so offer a wide variety from the first day to find what triggers feeding interest. Expect some coral nipping especially at LPS and tunicates; it belongs in a FOWLR or a robust mixed reef where some grazing losses are acceptable in exchange for keeping this spectacular fish.
