Care Summary
The Yellowhead Jawfish is a captivating fish that hovers vertically above a burrow it excavates in the substrate; the hovering posture and constant burrow maintenance make it one of the most behaviorally entertaining fish in the reef hobby. Provide a sand and rubble mix at least 4 inches deep; the Yellowhead uses shell fragments and rubble to reinforce its burrow entrance and will be chronically stressed without adequate burrowing material. A tight-fitting lid is essential; jawfish are notorious jumpers, particularly at night and during the first few weeks before they have fully established their burrow and territory. Feed frozen mysis and meaty small foods twice daily near the burrow opening; jawfish do not venture far from home to eat and will be consistently outcompeted in broadcast feeding scenarios.
