Care Summary

The Yellowtail Damselfish is one of the most reef-safe and least aggressive damsels available; the vivid blue body and yellow tail make it one of the most attractive nano reef fish in the hobby. House it in 20+ gallons; unlike many damsels it can work in a nano reef without terrorizing other fish, making it one of the few damsel species that is genuinely manageable in smaller systems. Feed frozen mysis, enriched brine, and quality pellets twice daily; it eats everything readily and is among the hardiest marine fish you can buy, tolerating a range of water conditions that would stress more delicate species. It can be kept in small groups in larger tanks; a trio in a 55-gallon reef adds movement and color without the aggression typical of other damsel species, and the group dynamic shows more natural behavior than a singleton.
