The Randall Pistol Shrimp is best known for its symbiotic partnership with watchman gobies, where the shrimp excavates and maintains a shared burrow while the goby stands guard at the entrance. It is reef-safe and peaceful toward most tankmates, though its snapping claw produces a sharp cracking sound that startles new hobbyists and can occasionally stun very small fish or invertebrates in close proximity. The primary challenge is establishing the goby-shrimp bond successfully, which requires introducing both animals into the same area simultaneously in a tank with a sand bed deep enough for burrowing. No direct feeding is required as it scavenges detritus from the burrow and shares food scraps with its goby partner, but occasional meaty target feeds will reinforce its activity near the front of the tank.
