Care Summary

Fireworks Leptoseris is an encrusting leptoseris whose polyps burst outward in bright streaks from a darker base — the firework pattern that gives the strain its name. Leptoseris are deep-water corals by nature, with thin, plate-like skeletons that crust over rock and spread in smooth sheets, and their colors are built for blue light: the bright oral discs fluoresce hard under actinics while the base stays dark, so the burst pattern pops most in a blue-heavy tank.

That deep-water background sets the care. Fireworks does best in low to medium light (about 50 to 150 PAR) — the lower rockwork, a shaded ledge, or the floor of the tank — and it is one of the easiest stony corals to bleach by placing it too high too fast. Start any new frag on the sandbed and move it up slowly, if at all. Moderate flow keeps sediment off the tissue; leptoseris have small mouths and do not need target feeding, though colonies take fine particulate food and dissolved organics from the water column.

Water parameters follow the usual stony-coral ranges: alkalinity 8 to 10 dKH, calcium 400 to 450 ppm, magnesium 1300 to 1450 ppm, with some nitrate and phosphate present. Because the skeleton is thin and the tissue tight to it, avoid handling the face of the coral and give it an inch or two of clearance — it encrusts rather than reaches, so it loses fights with stinging neighbors.

Field notes — what keepers report

Keepers consistently say this is a coral that punishes impatience with light: frags moved straight to mid-tank light often pale within a week and take a month in shade to recover their color. Several report the brightest bursts appear on new growth at the encrusting edge. It is also reported as a good low-light filler that colors the dark corners most SPS and LPS ignore, and as a slow starter that accelerates once the first inch of rock is covered.
