Blood orange leptoseris

Leptoseris sp

LPSIntermediate

Blood Orange is a Leptoseris strain grown for its saturated orange tissue over a thin, plating skeleton. The polyps are tiny and sit almost flush with the surface, so the coral reads as a glowing orange sheet that creeps across rockwork and throws a strong contrast against darker stone. Under blue light the orange fluoresces hard.

Leptoseris comes from deeper, dimmer reef zones, and it keeps that habit in a tank. Medium light at the bottom of the tank is plenty, and most pieces color best slightly shaded rather than under the brightest part of the fixture. It tolerates lower light better than almost any other stony coral. Flow should be low to moderate and indirect — enough to keep detritus from settling on the plate, without blasting the thin tissue. Keep alkalinity and calcium steady; the skeleton is paper-thin and the growing edge chips easily.

This is a peaceful coral that loses fights. Faster, heavier corals shade it out, and stinging neighbors burn the edge back, so give it its own patch of rock with a modest buffer and nothing above it that will lean over and block the light. It does not extend long sweepers, and a couple of inches of clearance is usually enough. It takes food from the water column at night — fine powdered coral foods and phytoplankton-sized particles — and broadcasts of small foods suit it better than large target-fed pieces.

Growth is moderate for an encruster, spreading as a thin sheet once the edge takes hold. The fragile skeleton is the main handling risk: frags snap along the plate when pried, so cut or score rather than lever them. A piece that gets shaded or knocked loose fades quietly, which makes placement the decision that decides most outcomes with this genus.

Field notes — what keepers report

- Keepers widely describe Leptoseris as the stony coral that thrives where others starve for light. Reports put healthy, colorful colonies on sand beds, under ledges, and in cave mouths, and the orange strains are often the last corals in a tank still glowing at the dimmest settings. A minority of keepers under very intense light report the orange going pale until the piece is shaded.

- The thin skeleton gets frequent mentions. Fraggers warn that the plate cracks instead of cutting cleanly and advise scoring from the back; other keepers report that small broken chips re-encrust and start new colonies where they land, which turns accidents into bonus frags.

- Growth reports vary with feeding. Keepers who broadcast fine foods at night describe steady edge advance, while keepers in bare, heavily skimmed tanks describe colonies that hold color but barely spread.
