Care Summary
The Blue Leg Hermit Crab is a reef hobby staple and one of the most widely recommended cleanup crew members, offering consistent algae and detritus control in a small, affordable, and peaceful package. It is safe for most reef systems and plays well with other small invertebrates, though like any hermit it will occasionally evict snails from their shells when suitable empty shells are not available. Always include extra empty shells of multiple sizes in the tank; this simple step dramatically reduces aggression toward snails and keeps the cleanup crew functioning as a team rather than fighting each other. No supplemental feeding is required in a healthy, well-fed reef, but the occasional algae wafer dropped near the sand bed will keep colonies active and visible for the hobbyist.
