Care Summary
The Mexican Red Leg Hermit Crab is a workhorse cleanup crew member from the Gulf of California, well-regarded for its tireless sand-sifting and algae-grazing behavior in smaller reef systems. It's one of the most beginner-friendly hermits available, fully reef-safe, peaceful with other tankmates, and perfectly at home in nano tanks as small as 10 gallons. Like all hermits, it will occasionally evict snails from their shells, so keeping a handful of spare empty shells in the tank is the best way to prevent it from targeting your cleanup crew. It grazes constantly on its own, but a small amount of algae-based food or a drop of mysis every few days helps sustain it in tanks that don't have a heavy natural algae load.
