Care Summary
Acropora abrotanoides is a staghorn Acropora with thick, fused branches, forming a heavy, robust colony quite unlike fine-branched staghorns. In aquaculture it is green-brown bodied with pink to red tips, and that tip colour is the feature most keepers watch for as a sign the colony is thriving. It is a substantial coral that needs a substantial system.
Care
Keep this advanced species in a mature, stable SPS system only. Alkalinity stability matters above all else — flat, predictable values with slow corrections — and calcium and magnesium must stay consistent to support its heavy skeleton. Flow should be high and strongly random, powerful enough to move around thick fused branches without a constant jet fixed on any one of them. As a high-light staghorn it belongs around PAR 250–400, acclimated gradually, with tip colour improving as light and stability align. An encrusting base and steady polyp extension indicate good health.
Placement and growth
Place it at the top of the aquascape in maximum light and flow, secured firmly given the weight its branches will gain. Keep at least 2 in of minimum clearance, and plan generous room around it — fused staghorn branches take real space as they grow. Growth is moderate; once encrusted, expect strong, thick new branches rather than rapid length, so patience at the frag stage is normal.
