Care Summary

Acropora anthocercis grows as a cluster or corymbose colony, with branches packed into a neat, cushion-like head rather than an open staghorn. Wild colonies are noted in green, pink and red, and aquacultured pieces tend to show that same warm range when light and chemistry are right. It is a moderate grower for an Acropora, building density gradually once its base has encrusted.

Care

An advanced species best kept in a mature, stable SPS system. Alkalinity stability comes first — hold a steady target with as little daily swing as possible, and keep calcium and magnesium consistent to support steady calcification. Provide high light, around PAR 250–400, introduced gradually to new frags, and strong random flow that moves through the cluster without blasting it with a constant jet. A tight cluster can trap detritus, so flow that reaches into the colony matters. Healthy signs are an encrusting base, even colour, and regular polyp extension; loss of colour or tissue at the centre often traces back to insufficient flow or an alkalinity swing.

Placement and growth

Give it a top placement with at least 2 in of clearance from neighbours on every side. Corymbose clusters widen as they grow, so leave room for the head to expand without crowding nearby SPS. Set it on a stable mount, keep flow paths open around it, and let it establish before expecting much upward growth.

Identification notes

Acropora anthocercis is a valid species, but attributions of particular hobby strains or named pieces to this species are speculation rather than settled identification. Treat trade names attached to it as labels for a colour form, not as proof of species.
