Care Summary

Scarlet Red Discosoma is a mushroom coral in the Discosoma group, kept for the saturated scarlet-red of its smooth disc. The disc sits flat and round against the rock, glowing orange-red under blue reef light and reading a deeper brick red under whiter light, with a small dark mouth at the center. A healthy mushroom looks fleshy, fully spread, and firmly attached by its foot.

The entry rates care as beginner level, with low light, low flow, bottom placement, peaceful aggression, and moderate growth. Place it low on rockwork or in a calm corner where light is gentle and flow barely moves the disc edge. Strong flow folds Discosoma and can work a mushroom loose from its foot, and strong light can cause shrinking or a slow walk away from the spot. This is one of the most forgiving corals in the hobby when its basic preference for calm and shade is respected.

Spacing still matters with a peaceful rating. Growth comes as expansion first, then budding: a settled mushroom spreads wide, thickens, and leaves small daughters behind as it creeps, which is how a cluster forms. Discosoma can crowd and shade neighbors and can detach and drift to new spots, turning up in places nobody planted them. Give the first mushroom a rock you are content to see covered, and keep prized slow growers out of its eventual path.

Feeding is rarely needed. Discosoma take most of their nutrition from light and dissolved nutrients, and a healthy tank usually grows them without any target feeding. Keep the disc clean with an occasional gentle puff from a turkey baster, since settled detritus in still water is the main day-to-day irritant. Watch the disc edge after any change in lighting or flow — a mushroom that keeps folding or lifting at the edges is asking for a calmer, dimmer spot.

Field notes — what keepers report

- Keepers widely describe Discosoma as among the hardiest corals they own, with mushrooms surviving tank moves, equipment failures, and beginner mistakes that cost other corals. That hardiness cuts both ways in reports: a thriving cluster can spread further than planned and become difficult to remove from rockwork once established across a large area.

- Detachment and wandering come up often. Keepers describe mushrooms letting go after a change in flow or light, drifting, and reattaching in a shaded crevice, sometimes splitting into new mushrooms along the way. The usual advice is to settle a loose mushroom in a low-flow container with rubble until the foot grips, rather than using glue on the slippery foot.

- Color reports for red Discosoma vary by light. Keepers under blue-heavy lighting describe the brightest scarlet and orange tones, while keepers under whiter light describe a deeper, brick-red disc. Reports agree the mushroom stays healthy across that range, so color is treated as a lighting choice rather than a health signal, unless shrinking or detachment joins it.
