Spanish Hogfish
Bodianus rufus
Reef Safe
With Caution
Care Summary
The Spanish Hogfish is a cheerful, active fish with bold yellow and purple coloration that is hardy and adaptable but will eat any ornamental shrimp or small crab in its tank. House it in 55+ gallons; juvenile Spanish Hogfish act as cleaner fish for wild reef populations, a behavior that sometimes carries over in captivity and adds an interesting dynamic. Feed frozen meaty foods including mysis, silversides, and shrimp twice daily; hogfish are active and need consistent protein intake to maintain their bold coloration and active disposition. It is reef-safe toward corals but not toward inverts; your cleanup crew needs to be limited to snails and urchins, and any shrimp you value should not share a tank with this fish.
