The Bat Star is a Pacific sea star with webbed, bat-wing arms and a wide range of color morphs including red, orange, yellow, and purple that make it a visually interesting substrate dweller. It adapts well to reef conditions and will scavenge detritus, algae, and decaying matter from the sandbed and rockwork, making it a genuinely useful cleanup crew member. The caution flag comes from its occasional interest in soft corals and sessile invertebrates, particularly when food is scarce, so monitor its behavior closely in a mixed reef. Supplement its diet with occasional meaty foods or algae-based wafers to keep it well-fed and less likely to investigate your coral frags.
