Spiny Spider Crab
Maja squinado
Care Summary
The Spiny Spider Crab is an impressive, long-legged European species that can grow to a significant size and makes a bold display animal in a large fish-only or invertebrate-focused system with careful planning. House it in a roomy tank with open substrate and rockwork for shelter, and select tankmates carefully, as it may pick at soft corals, slow-moving invertebrates, or sleeping fish if underfed. The caution rating reflects its size and opportunistic feeding behavior: while generally peaceful toward fish that are too fast to catch, it is not truly reef safe and will damage ornamental invertebrates given the chance. Feed it generously three to four times per week with a varied diet of shrimp, clam, mussel, and dried seaweed to keep it well-satiated and reduce the likelihood of opportunistic predation.
