Care Summary

The Sponge Crab is one of the most unusual crabs you can keep, actively cutting and holding pieces of live sponge on its back as natural camouflage. It needs a tank with available sponge material and open substrate to wander, and it's generally peaceful toward tankmates that aren't small enough to be mistaken for food. The tricky part of keeping this species is sourcing and maintaining live sponge in the system, as it will stress out and stop behaving naturally if it can't find suitable material to carry. Feed it a varied omnivore diet including small meaty pieces and algae-based foods every few days, and it will do well in a stable, established reef.
