The Thorny Oyster is a spiny, encrusting bivalve that cements itself to rock and serves as a unique, low-demand display animal in reef and FOWLR tanks. It is fully reef-safe, peaceful, and works in most established tanks with stable parameters, though it needs to be positioned where it won't be shaded out by neighboring corals. The challenge is filter-feeding sustenance in a nutrient-poor system, clear water is great for corals but can leave bivalves without enough food to survive long-term. Dose phytoplankton or nanoplankton two to three times a week and place the animal in moderate flow to bring food to it consistently, which will keep it feeding and healthy.
