Whelk Snail
Busycon carica
Care Summary
The Channeled Whelk is a large, predatory marine snail native to the Atlantic coast that uses its muscular foot to pry open bivalves and smother slow prey, making it a specialist animal suited to species-only or very carefully curated systems. House it in a tank with a soft sandbed and robust tankmates that are not vulnerable to predation, and never add it to a reef with clams, snails, or other mollusks you intend to keep. Its semi-aggressive rating reflects its active predatory nature: it will systematically hunt and consume other snails and clams, and it is strong enough to crack open thin-shelled bivalves, so all tankmates must be chosen with this behavior in mind. Feed it whole clams, mussels on the half shell, or fresh shrimp two to three times per week, dropping food directly onto the sandbed where it will locate it by scent within minutes.
