Care Summary

Acropora insignis is a classic staghorn, building upright, branching colonies with a tidy, recognisable silhouette. Aquacultured pieces typically show blue to purple tips over a cream body, the contrast becoming sharper under strong light and stable water. Growth is moderate, accelerating once a frag has encrusted and started branching in earnest.

Care

Keep this advanced species in a mature, stable SPS system. Alkalinity stability matters above all else — minimise daily swings and keep calcium and magnesium consistent to support continuous growth. Provide high light around PAR 250–400, ramping new pieces up gradually, and strong random flow that surges around the branches rather than a constant jet in one spot. A spreading encrusting base and consistent polyp extension are the clearest signs of health; staghorns that stall or brown out are usually responding to a chemistry drift or a change made too quickly.

Placement and growth

A top placement gives it the light and flow it expects. Leave at least 2 in of clearance from neighbouring corals, with additional space in the main direction of branch growth. Mount it upright and firm, allow the base to encrust before expecting vertical growth, and avoid handling established colonies, as staghorn branches are brittle.
