Care Summary
Acropora microphthalma is a slender, arborescent staghorn Acropora and one of the faster-growing species in this group, quickly forming an open thicket of thin, upright branches. In aquaculture it is cream to green bodied with green tips, a subtle combination that reads best as a whole colony rather than a single branch. Its speed makes it a good indicator coral for system conditions.
Care
Although growth is fast, this is still an advanced Acropora for a mature, stable SPS system. Alkalinity stability matters above all else — fast growth consumes alkalinity quickly, so test often and keep dosing consistent rather than correcting in bursts. Calcium and magnesium must stay consistent in step with that consumption. Provide high, strong random flow through the slender branches to keep them clean; never use a constant jet, which will bend and damage the fine growth. Light is high, around PAR 250–400, acclimated gradually. An encrusting base and full polyp extension along the branches are the health signs.
Placement and growth
Place it at the top of the aquascape in strong light and turbulent flow. Keep at least 2 in of minimum clearance, and allow extra room beyond that — with fast, arborescent growth it will occupy space sooner than most Acropora and may need occasional pruning to protect neighbours. Once encrusted, expect rapid vertical extension and plan its position for the colony it will become, not the frag it is.
