California Tort

California Tort, also known as Cali Tort, is one of the defining Acropora tortuosa strains in the hobby and a California lineage coral with lasting tier-one fame. Its signature look is a deep blue body set off by green polyps and green at the tips, a contrast that reads clearly even in a crowded SPS display. Torts are admired for their dense, upright, bottlebrush-like form and for colour that rewards patience rather than quick growth.

Care

This is an advanced coral for a mature SPS system. Give it high light and high, strong random flow, and keep the emphasis on stability, especially alkalinity stability, with calcium and magnesium held steady alongside it. Small alkalinity swings are the most common setback for tortuosa strains, so consistent dosing and regular testing matter more than chasing numbers. Clean, stable, nutrient-controlled water helps the blue body stay deep and the green polyps stay bright.

Placement and growth

Place it at the top of the rockwork where light and flow are strongest, and give it room to build upward without being shaded by faster neighbours. Growth is slow, so expect a long establishment period before the colony takes shape. It is peaceful in temperament, but its neighbours can crowd it, so plan spacing around its eventual colony form rather than its frag size, and avoid moving it once it has settled and started to colour well.
