Hallucination
Zoanthus sp.
Also known as: Hallucinations
Care Summary
Hallucination is a Zoanthus strain with a purple-black face scattered with orange and gold speckle, a combination that seems to shimmer and shift as you look at it. The dark background makes every fleck of warm colour stand out, so a colony reads like embers floating in shadow. It is a tier 1 collector zoa, closely associated with the speckled premium end of the hobby, and its pattern rewards close viewing more than almost any other strain in this group.
Care
Give it bottom to middle placement under medium light and medium flow through the mat. It is rated easy, but it grows slowly, so the job is stability: measurable nutrients in the water, since zoanthids sulk in ultra-clean water, steady alkalinity, and minimal disturbance once placed. A colony that is happy will hold its dark base colour and bright speckle; pale or closed polyps are a sign to check the basics before changing anything drastic.
Keeping and spread
Hallucination spreads by slow mat extension, adding polyps at the edge over time. Allow roughly 2 in of space around the colony so its eventual spread does not swallow slower neighbours, which a mat with moderate aggression can smother by simply growing over them. When fragging, cut the mat cleanly between polyps, mount the piece on a plug, and give it a long healing window in the same conditions as the mother colony.
