Nightcrawler Zoanthid
Zoanthus sp
Also known as: Nightcrawler zoas
Care Summary
Nightcrawler is a Zoanthus selection with deep red faces lit by a speckled orange starburst that radiates from a pale mouth, finished with yellow-tipped lashes. The pattern is busy up close — fine orange rays and dots over the red disc — and reads as a glowing ember-red mat from across the room.
Care is the standard zoanthid recipe: low to medium light, medium flow, and placement from the bottom to the middle of the rockwork. Nightcrawler grows at the usual fast zoanthid pace once settled, spreading by stolons over neighboring rock. Give it about two inches of room; it is not an aggressive stinger, but a fast mat will shade slower neighbors in time.
Feed the tank, not the polyp: Nightcrawler takes most of its nutrition from light and dissolved organics, and broadcast feeding the tank keeps the mat fat and the colors saturated. Stable alkalinity and a little nitrate in the water suit it better than ultra-low-nutrient conditions, where zoanthids generally sulk and shrink.
Field notes — what keepers report: Red zoanthids hold their color best under blue-heavy light with some white in the mix; under very white light the red can wash toward brick. Keepers also note that starburst-patterned zoas like this one show their finest ray detail when the polyps are fully inflated in gentle, indirect flow rather than a direct current.
