Care Summary

The Oregon Tort is a named Acropora tortuosa selection and one of the hobby's longest-running grails: a slow-growing, bottlebrush tortuosa that colors mint-green to blue-green over a lavender-blue body, with dense, upturned corallites. The original colony traces to Oregon reef keeping in the early 2000s, and true-lineage frags are still traded keeper to keeper because the coral's growth makes commercial supply permanently thin.

Care is the committed SPS recipe: high light at the top of the rockwork, strong and random flow, and stability above all else — tortuosa reacts to alkalinity swings faster than almost any other acropora, and the Oregon line is famously the slowest of them, sometimes basing out for months before it grows a new tip. Placement high, with about three inches of room; it is peaceful and will lose fights, so keep aggressive neighbors off it.

Color expectations need patience. New frags often sit pale — minty and washed — for weeks after shipping or a tank move, and the blue deepens only in a settled, fed, high-light system. Feeding is indirect: the coral does well in tanks with fish fed generously and nutrients detectable rather than zero.

Field notes — what keepers report: Keepers repeat two things about the Oregon Tort — it is slower than its reputation, and it is worth it anyway. Many report the frag doing nothing visible for a season, then encrusting and coloring almost at once; others caution that fast early growth usually means the frag is not the true Oregon line. Both sides agree on the husbandry: blast it with light and flow, keep alkalinity boring, and do not move it.
