Care Summary

Purple Monster is a tier-one Acropora strain associated with Steve Tyree and remembered as the original Limited Edition coral, from a Solomon Islands import. Its signature colours are a deep, solid purple body with white polyps, and it is noted in its seed history for being very slow growing. Few Acropora carry the same historical weight in the hobby, and its rich, uniform purple has kept it in demand among serious collectors.

Care

This is an expert-level coral for a mature SPS system only. Provide high light and high, strong random flow, and prioritise alkalinity stability above almost everything else, with calcium and magnesium kept equally steady. Avoid parameter swings, abrupt lighting changes and unnecessary movement. Because growth and recovery are both very slow, prevention matters far more than intervention; stable water over long periods is what allows the deep purple colour to develop and hold.

Placement and growth

Place it at the top of the rockwork in strong light and flow, in a permanent position where it will not be shaded or disturbed. Growth is slow, so give a frag generous time to settle and encrust before expecting colony form. It is peaceful, but its slow pace means faster neighbours can easily overtake it, so protect its space early and plan the surrounding aquascape around its long-term needs.

Identification notes

The species of Purple Monster is unresolved. It has historically been called Acropora loripes in the hobby, but that identification has never been confirmed, so it is treated here only as a hobby attribution and this entry remains at genus level as Acropora sp.
