Walt Disney Acropora
Acropora tenuis
Also known as: WD acro, Walt Disney tenuis
Care Summary
Walt Disney is the most famous Acropora tenuis strain in the modern hobby — a rainbow acro whose branches stack blue, purple, and pink under a dusting of yellow-green growth tips and polyps that flush red-pink under actinic light. The strain traces to a wild tenuis colony brought in through Reef Raft USA and popularized by Mike Biggar (BigR), and for years a small frag commanded the highest price of any acro in the trade. Aquacultured frags have spread widely since, and the coral still anchors the top shelf of most serious SPS collections.
Acropora tenuis grows on upper reef slopes across the Indo-Pacific, in bright, turbulent water over the reef crest. The Walt Disney keeps those demands in full. It colors best under high light — most successful keepers run it in the top third of the tank under strong, blue-heavy illumination — with powerful, random flow that keeps the dense branch structure clear of detritus. Alkalinity held steady in the 8–10 dKH range matters more than any single number; tenuis sulks through alk swings, and Walt Disney answers instability by browning at the base and stalling.
Feeding is light-duty: the coral lives from its zooxanthellae, though it will take fine particulate and amino-acid foods. Keep nitrate and phosphate measurable rather than zero — rainbow tenuis kept in stripped, ultra-low-nutrient water classically goes pale, while a little nutrient in the system lets the pink and gold pigments develop. Growth comes in two acts: a long encrusting phase that can last months, then upright branching once the base is secure. Frag from the branch tips, and expect a fresh cut to encrust before it grows upward.
Field notes — what keepers report: Color reports split by lighting. Keepers under LED-heavy blue spectrums see the full rainbow; keepers under whiter metal-halide or T5 light often report a prettier but simpler blue-purple coral. Many keepers warn that new frags sit brown for weeks after shipping and color from the tips inward once they start growing. The shared advice: buy the frag, mount it high, and leave it alone.
