Care Summary

The Gem Tang is the grail fish for surgeonfish collectors, and every cent of its price tag is justified by how absolutely stunning a fat, healthy specimen looks in a reef. That jet-black body peppered with sharp white spots is not like anything else in the family, and unlike many expensive fish, it does not lose its appeal after the novelty wears off. Care is very similar to Zebrasoma veliferum or Zebrasoma xanthurum, so if you can keep those you can keep this, assuming your water chemistry is consistent. Buy the biggest, fattest one you can afford, quarantine it properly, and get it eating before it enters your display.
