Care Summary

The Sailfin Tang (velifer) is the Indo-Pacific sister species to the Pacific Sailfin; care is essentially identical, requiring 150+ gallons for a healthy adult with full fin extension. Feed nori clips and herbivore blends daily; the large body needs consistent algae intake to maintain color and the immune function that keeps tangs from succumbing to parasites. The tall dorsal sail is only fully displayed when the fish is relaxed and has adequate space; a cramped tang keeps its fin partially folded, which defeats the entire visual appeal of the species. It is peaceful with most reef inhabitants and a solid choice for a large mixed reef if tank size is adequate; buy juveniles in the 3-4 inch range rather than small frags of adult fish that have already developed tank habits.
