Care Summary
The Yellow Tang is one of the most iconic reef fish in the hobby and a genuine workhorse algae grazer; Hawaiian captive-bred specimens are now available and are significantly hardier than wild-caught fish. House it in 75+ gallons; Yellow Tangs are active swimmers and show HLLE scarring in tanks under 4 feet long, with the vibrant yellow color fading to a washed-out pale tone in stressed or underfed fish. Feed nori clips daily plus herbivore blends and frozen algae; the bright yellow coloration is directly tied to diet quality and a well-fed tang grazing consistently will maintain much richer color than one scraping a bare tank. In multi-tang displays it can be assertive toward similarly shaped tangs; pair it with tangs from different genera like Acanthurus or Ctenochaetus rather than other Zebrasoma species for the most harmonious community.
