Sargassum

Care Summary

Sargassum is a brown macroalgae naturally found floating in open ocean gyres, but it can be kept in reef systems with high lighting and strong, turbulent flow. It grows moderately fast and provides natural shelter for small fish and invertebrates. In the aquarium it benefits from iron and trace element supplementation. It can be difficult to maintain long-term without very bright lighting; most specimens slowly decline without metal halide or high-output LEDs. Primarily a display and novelty species.
