Care Summary

Dictyota is a brown macroalgae that can be both a nuisance and a display species depending on the tank. Under high nutrients it spreads aggressively and few herbivores will eat it — most tangs and urchins avoid it due to its diterpene compounds. Control is difficult once established; improve water quality, increase nutrient export, and reduce lighting duration. In low-nutrient systems it remains in small, manageable clumps and can look attractive. Prevention is far easier than eradication.
