Shaving Brush Alga (Penicillus capitatus) is a charming display macroalgae with a calcified stipe topped by a tuft of fine green filaments. It calcifies similarly to Halimeda and requires stable calcium and alkalinity. Prefers sandy substrates where it anchors with a small holdfast — place it directly in the sandbed. Grows slowly, tolerates moderate light and gentle flow. When it dies, it releases calcium into the system, providing a minor buffer. Short-lived (6–18 months); replace when it begins to bleach.
