Mellow Yellow Yuma

Ricordea yuma

SoftBeginner

Mellow Yellow Yuma is a mushroom coral listed as Ricordea yuma. A single polyp attaches by a foot, and the oral disc spreads low and wide when settled, covered in short, bumpy tentacles that give the surface a beaded texture. Tentacles also run up around the mouth, a trait keepers use when separating yuma from its florida relative. The mellow yellow name follows the soft yellow carried across the disc, a gentle tone that reads warm under white light and brighter under blue.

The entry lists beginner care, low light, low flow, bottom placement, peaceful behavior, and moderate growth. Place the mushroom low, on rock near the sand bed, in a sheltered pocket where the disc can open flat. Low light suits this yuma well. Strong light can fade the yellow, shrink the disc through the day, or push the mushroom to release its foot and wander toward shade. Make any move small, and judge the result over a week of full, flat opening.

Low flow matters as much as low light. Current that lifts an edge, folds the disc, or keeps it cupped is too strong for the spot. A mushroom that dislikes its place may let go and drift, landing in bright light or against a stinging neighbor. A common settling method is a low-flow container with rubble, left until the foot grips, then the rubble set in its final spot and left undisturbed.

Feeding is light and largely indirect. The mushroom absorbs nutrients from the water and can take very fine food that settles on the disc, closing slowly around it. Regular reef feeding covers its needs in most tanks. Large meaty pieces tend to slide off or foul the rock at the base. Repeated handling to offer food costs attachment time and adds little, so a settled feeding pattern through the tank routine works better.

This coral is listed as peaceful and carries no sweeper reach. Spacing still deserves care. A settled disc expands wide at midday, babies appear beside the foot over time, and direct contact can irritate a delicate neighbor where discs press together. Leave a clear margin around the disc, keep LPS sweepers out of its sheltered corner, and choose rock the colony can claim as it spreads.

Growth is listed as moderate. The mother disc grows gradually, then produces babies from the foot or divides, and a settled group can cover a rock face over a season. Yumas reward a stable spot. Every move restarts attachment, and repeated drifting can shrink a mushroom over time. Keep nutrients present and steady, because very clean water can shrink mushrooms, while swings invite algae across the rock around them.

Common pitfalls include bright light in pursuit of stronger yellow, flow across a new piece before the foot grips, and checking the foot daily while it tries to attach. Give a loose yuma calm rubble and shade, then leave it alone until the disc opens wide in the same place for a full week.

Field notes — what keepers report

- Light reports divide more sharply for yuma than for many mushrooms. Some keepers describe yellow yumas holding color and size only in genuinely shaded spots, while others describe good results at the bright end of low light once a piece settled there. Both sides describe slow moves and long watching, because a yuma often answers a light change days later.

- Settling reports focus on drifting. Keepers describe loose yumas wandering until they found a calm, shaded pocket, and rubble containers ending the wandering once the foot took hold. Reports agree that chasing and re-placing a drifting mushroom prolongs the problem.

- Spread reports lean steady. Keepers describe babies appearing at the foot of a settled mother and a group widening over months on undisturbed rock. Keepers also describe a mother moved often producing few babies, even in a tank where a settled neighbor spread well.
