Red Devil People Eater
Zoanthus gigantus
Also known as: Red Devil PE; Zoanthus gigantus (People Eater)
Care Summary
Red Devil People Eater is a bold Zoanthus strain with a solid red face and a contrasting green mouth at the centre of each large polyp. Despite being widely sold as a 'paly' in the hobby, People Eaters are in fact Zoanthus gigantus, not true Palythoa — a distinction that explains their larger polyp size and growth form. As a Tier 3 name it is a sought-after People Eater type, valued for the simplicity of its colour: uninterrupted red with only that green oral disc to break it up.
Care
Provide medium lighting and medium flow through the mat, placing the colony in the bottom to middle of the tank. Zoanthus gigantus follows standard zoanthid needs — measurable nutrients rather than ultra-clean water, in which zoanthids sulk, and stable alkalinity for steady opening and growth. It is rated intermediate in difficulty, so avoid sudden light increases and give new arrivals time to acclimate before judging colour.
Keeping and spread
Growth is moderate and mat-forming, with the colony spreading over rock and adding larger polyps at its margin. Leave about 2 in of space around it, as an established mat can smother slower neighbours competing for the same surface. Aggression is moderate and largely about territory. Frag by cutting cleanly through the mat between polyps and mounting the section to a plug; handle cut polyps gently and let frags recover in moderate flow before handling again.
