Scarface
Zoanthus sp.
Also known as: Scarfaces
Care Summary
Scarface is a Zoanthus strain defined by a bright yellow face broken by dark, scar-like blotches across the oral disc, a pattern that gives each polyp an irregular, weathered look quite unlike a clean-ringed zoanthid. It remains a Tier 3 collector name, less commonly encountered than the staple yellows, and its appeal lies in that contrast — cheerful yellow ground colour cut through with dark markings. Polyps are the typical Zoanthus form, forming a low, dense mat over rock.
Care
It is listed for medium lighting and medium flow, best placed in the bottom to middle of the aquascape where flow passes through the mat and keeps detritus from settling between polyps. Keep nutrients measurable — zoanthids sulk in ultra-clean water — and hold alkalinity stable, as swings are a common cause of closed or melting polyps. Rated intermediate in care difficulty, it rewards a settled tank and gradual acclimation to light rather than frequent moving.
Keeping and spread
Expect moderate, mat-forming growth. The colony will creep outward and can eventually smother slower neighbours if it reaches them, so leave roughly 2 in of buffer space and use isolated rockwork if containment matters. Aggression is moderate, expressed mainly through overgrowth. Fragging is done by cutting the mat between polyps and mounting the cut section; allow frags to heal in the same moderate light and flow before moving them on.
