Care Summary

Utter Chaos is one of the most recognizable named zoanthid morphs in the hobby. Each polyp carries a bright orange-red face broken up by dark speckling and blotches, ringed by short skirt tentacles tipped in orange. No two polyps pattern exactly alike, and a growing colony turns into a patchwork of orange, red, and dark marbling that stands out even under white light. Under blue light the oranges glow and the contrast between the speckles sharpens. Give it mid-level rockwork with medium to high light and moderate flow. Utter Chaos holds its color across a range of tanks, but strong blue-spectrum light brings out the brightest orange, and steady flow keeps the polyps clean and fully open. It settles in quickly after acclimation. Leave an inch or two of room around the frag, because a healthy colony spreads steadily outward and can crowd slower neighbors. Handle it with the same care as every zoanthid: the mucus can contain palytoxin. Wear gloves when fragging, keep it away from open cuts, wash your hands well after handling, and never boil, steam, or pressure-wash rock that has zoanthids on it. Growth is fast for a named morph once the frag settles. Weekly feedings of fine coral food or zooplankton speed it up further, and new polyps bud from the edge of the mat in good conditions. It frags easily — work a sharp blade under the mat, mount the piece on a fresh plug, and give it a week of moderate flow to heal.
