Care Summary

The Confused Rainbow Montipora is an aquacultured rainbow monti grown from the Montipora confusa group of encrusting and plating montiporas. The base tissue runs blue to purple, the corallites and growing edge flash green, and the polyps glow orange to red under blue light — three color zones on one small plate, which is where the rainbow name comes from. Under white light it reads moodier, mostly deep blue-purple with green edges; the full spectrum shows under actinic-heavy lighting.

Montipora confusa forms thick encrusting plates with raised, irregular corallites, giving the surface a rough, almost confused texture compared with the smooth plates of Montipora capricornis. It grows outward in shelves and whorls where it has room, and encrusts down over rock where it does not. Colonies color best with strong light — think upper third of the rockwork, 250 to 400 PAR — and strong, random flow that keeps detritus from settling on the plates.

Water stability is the real care requirement. Hold alkalinity between 8 and 10 dKH without daily swings, calcium 400 to 450 ppm, magnesium 1300 to 1450 ppm, and keep nitrate and phosphate present but low (roughly 5 to 15 ppm nitrate, 0.03 to 0.1 ppm phosphate). Montis are often the first SPS to show it when alkalinity drifts, bleaching at the edges or browning out when nutrients bottom out. Acclimate a new frag lower for the first week, then step it up into high light over two to three weeks.

Field notes — what keepers report

Keepers say the orange polyps are the first thing to fade when light drops, and the last to come back when it returns — many use polyp color as the colony's light gauge. Reports agree the green rim only shows on actively growing edges, so a colony with no green rim is usually stalled rather than colored down. Several keepers note this monti plates aggressively sideways and will shade corals below it, so it earns a top-shelf spot with nothing delicate underneath. Growth reports vary with flow: in strong random flow colonies stay thick and encrusting, while in gentler flow they scroll upward into looser plates.
