Sunkist Bounce Mushroom

Rhodactis sp.

Also known as: Sunkist bounce shroom

Care Summary

The Sunkist bounce is a Rhodactis mushroom in saturated orange — orange disc, orange fringe, orange vesicles — named for the soda-orange color it holds under blue light. The "bounce" in its name refers to the inflated, bubble-like vesicles that rise from the disc as the mushroom matures in captivity. Young frags often arrive nearly smooth, and the bubbles develop over months. A fully bounced Sunkist, covered in plump orange bulbs, ranks among the most recognizable mushrooms in the hobby.

Rhodactis mushrooms come from Indo-Pacific lagoons and reef flats, where they carpet rock and rubble in shallow, sunlit, nutrient-rich water. The Sunkist keeps the family habits: it wants low flow, a stable seat on rock or rubble, and room to spread. Rhodactis carry a real sting for a mushroom and will win most contact disputes with neighboring corals, so place the colony where its slow creep cannot reach anything delicate. The disc eats readily — a mysis shrimp or pellet set on the surface folds the whole mushroom around the food.

Light is the dial that controls the bounce. Too little light and the mushroom stays flat, brown-orange, and ordinary. Steady moderate light with a strong blue component coaxes the vesicles to inflate and the orange to saturate. Push light too hard and the disc shrinks, pales, and may let go of the rock. Most keepers settle the colony low in the tank and raise light gradually. Propagation is simple and slow: the mushroom splits on its own, or a keeper cuts the disc through the mouth and lets the halves heal on rubble in low flow.

Field notes — what keepers report: Bubble size varies enormously between tanks, and keepers disagree about the cause. Some report the biggest vesicles under higher light; others get their best bounce at the dim edge of the tank and credit richer feeding instead. Reports do agree that a Sunkist moved frequently never settles enough to bounce, and that wild-colored orange holds best with measurable nitrate in the water.
