Care Summary
The Chalk Bass is one of the most underrated beginner fish in the hobby; it is hardy, peaceful, colorful, and can be kept in groups, which is rare for basslets. House three to five in a 30+ gallon reef; they establish a loose hierarchy without serious fighting, and a group is far more impressive than a lone specimen hovering in a corner. They are not picky eaters and will take frozen mysis, pellets, and chopped meaty foods with equal enthusiasm from their first day in the tank. They stay small at around 3 inches and will not bother corals or inverts; if you want a social, reef-safe fish that does not need a species-only setup, Chalk Bass belong on your shortlist.
